Becoming the Lighthouse

A Moment of Recognition
Sometimes a lesson arrives when we're not looking for one.
It isn't spoken.
It isn't written in a book.
It simply appears, and something inside us whispers, Pay attention.
That happened to me standing on the Oregon Coast, watching a lighthouse do exactly what it was built to do.
In that moment, I realized something I had somehow overlooked my entire life.
A lighthouse never chases ships.
It doesn't scan the horizon wondering who's coming.
It doesn't leave its place to convince boats it has something valuable to offer.
It simply stands.
And shines.
What the Lighthouse Knows
A lighthouse understands something that we often forget.
Its purpose isn't to pursue.
Its purpose is to illuminate.
Whether one ship passes or one hundred...
Whether anyone notices on a particular day...
Whether the sea is calm or the fog is thick...
The lighthouse continues to do the work it was created to do.
It doesn't measure its worth by its audience.
It measures its success by its faithfulness to its purpose.
Where We Get It Backwards
So many of us spend our lives chasing.
We chase approval.
Recognition.
Validation.
Followers.
Clients.
Relationships.
Opportunities.
We believe that if we just try harder, say it better, become more polished, or work a little longer, then maybe we'll finally be enough.
But what if we've been looking in the wrong direction?
What if our job isn't to chase?
What if our job is to become?
Tending the Light
A lighthouse doesn't become brighter by chasing ships.
It becomes brighter because someone faithfully tends the light.
I love that image.
Because tending takes intention.
It means caring for what's already there.
Protecting it.
Fueling it.
Cleaning the lens.
Showing up again tomorrow.
Maybe tending our own light looks like resting when we're tired.
Keeping promises to ourselves.
Learning.
Growing.
Creating.
Laughing.
Dancing.
Being present with the people we love.
Living in alignment with who we truly are.
Not so others will notice...
But because that's who we were created to be.
Trusting the Light
The beautiful thing about a lighthouse is that it never knows whose life it will impact.
It simply shines.
Some ships may never need it.
Others may depend on it.
The lighthouse doesn't get to choose.
It doesn't need to.
Its only responsibility is to keep the light on.
I wonder how much more peaceful life would feel if we trusted our own purpose that way.
If we stopped counting who noticed.
Stopped measuring whether we were enough.
Stopped wondering if we were doing it right.
And instead...
Simply kept our light on.
The Invitation
Maybe we were never meant to spend our lives chasing.
Maybe we were meant to become people who shine so authentically that those searching for hope, encouragement, possibility, or love naturally recognize something familiar in us.
Not because we convinced them.
Not because we performed for them.
But because we were willing to become fully ourselves.
Maybe that's what the lighthouse has been teaching us all along.
Stand where you've been called to stand.
Tend your light.
Trust your purpose.
And keep shining.
Reflection
Where in my life am I chasing instead of shining?
What practices help me tend my own light?
Where am I measuring my worth by the response of others instead of by my faithfulness to who I'm becoming?
What would change if I trusted that the people meant to find my light will?
